Farooque Ahmed's plan to explode a bomb on the major public transport network blew up in his face when it turned out the terrorists he was plotting with were government agents.
As part of the sinister plan he provided support to a terrorist organization by scouting locations and working out what time of day would cause the biggest number of casualties, court documents show.
The psychopath apparently chose a target between 4 and 5pm as it “would be the best time to stage an attack to cause the highest number of casualties”.
Wearing the green jumpsuit he’ll likely wear for the rest of his life, he told the court, “All I can say is I'm sorry. It was the wrong action.”
Despite Ahmed’s remorse, U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee showed little sympathy as he sentenced him to almost a quarter-of-a-century behind bars.
He said: “There is no form of Islam that condones killing women and children or innocents.”
Ahmed’s prison term will also be followed by 50 years of supervised release.
