IT WAS one of the most notorious murders in the last 30 years and now, another chapter has closed on it. Matthew F. Stuart became notorious as the stooge younger brother that evil Chuck Stuart talked into becoming his murder accomplice. Matt Stuart, 45, was found dead in a homeless shelter Saturday. Christine Desimone, who knew him well told the Boston Herald: "He was a gentle giant. He never said one bad word about nobody. Always had a smile on his face." Foul play has been ruled out. Stuart, 45, never spoke of the Oct. 23, 1989, slayings of his pregnant sister-in-law Carol DiMaiti Stuart and unborn nephew, Christopher, by his older brother, Charles “Chuck” Stuart. The murders shocked Boston and the nation. Chuck Stuart told cops that a black man had murdered his wife and unorn child and had shot him. It inflamed racial tensions in the hub but some detectives were skeptical of Chuck Stuart from day one. Stuart served nearly three years in jail after pleading guilty in 1992 to obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud for disposing of the handgun his brother used to shoot his wife in the head on Mission Hill during a concocted carjacking and robbery. Charles Stuart fell to his death from the Tobin Bridge on Jan. 4, 1990, upon learning Matthew had turned himself in. MORE IN THE BOSTON HERALD
