FOR the eagle eyed agents, used to spotting drugs, guns and sometimes people being smuggled over the border this was a first - man smuggling Balogna across the border.
Clearly the man loves his meat - enough to try smuggle 76 pounds of the the illegal lunch meat from Mexico by hiding it in a spare tire. It's not clear whether it was for personal use or he intended to supply it, but either way guards at El Paso, NM were less than impressed. Port Director Hector Mancha told KRQE: “This is a highly unusual seizure because of the concealment method.
"This bologna is a prohibited product because it is made from pork and has the potential for introducing foreign animal diseases to the U.S. pork industry.”
He refused to speculate on what his agents would be having for lunch over the next few days but confirmed the driver was assessed a $1,000 civil penalty and was released.
