SMUGGLER |
Saucy secret agent, Anna Fermanova, 23, was caught by customs agents at New York's JFK Airport, with three scopes stuffed into her ugg boots, in March.
They took the one night-vision weapon sight and two advanced rifle sights hidden in her suitcase and allowed her to get her flight on to Russia.
But arrested her July 15 when she returned to the US because the scopes are on a list of sensitive munitions that require a license to export.
The 25-year-old beauty school grad, who was born in Latvia but lives in Plano, TX, did not have a license, but told the feds she was taking the high-tech devices to her husband and father-in-law, who is the "target master" at a hunting lodge called "The Moscow Club."
They intended to sell the scopes to hunters for nighttime shoots of bears, wild boars and other large animals, according to court papers.Weeping, she told Brooklyn Federal Court her actions were "stupid and foolish."
Her attorney Scott Palmer said: "Whether she was blinded by love for her soon-to-be ex-husband I don't know, but I don't believe she appreciated the magnitude of what she was doing."
Judge Carol Amon however said some jail time was necessary as a deterrent because smuggled scopes could easily get into the hands of enemies and be used against U.S. troops overseas.
She noted that the defendant was no babe in the woods - she knew what she was doing was illegal and had smuggled items twice before she was caught.
