The light fingered pickpocket used the traditional bump and run method to lift the smartphone from the 31-year-old woman's handbag.
But after entering the wrong passcode into the phone, he triggered the app and it took a clear picture of him and e-mailed to her.
The savvy woman, who has not been named, recognized the shaven-headed man in the picture as the one who robbed her and passed the details on to cops who released the photo.
They described the suspect as Hispanic, in his 20s and about 5'8" with short, dark hair and an earring in his left ear.
The iGotYa is a third-party app, made by Cyndia, which is not available in the official Apple store.
It requires people 'jailbreak' their iPhones to override Apple's built-in ban on competitors' software.
But although Apple maintains using third party software is dangerous, the technique was legalised last year when the Library of Congress ruled that the practice does not violate copyright laws.
A high-ranking police source told the New York Daily News that victims should not cancel their service if their smartphone is stolen. He added: "If they made a couple of phone calls, we can see who they called and we can identify them."
Anyone with information is asked to call (800) 577-TIPS (8477) or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES), then enter TIP577.
Here's the instructions on how to get it on your phone.
